If you are travelling soon and have only just realised that you may need vaccinations, you are not alone. We regularly hear from people whose departure date has crept up, whose GP cannot see them in time or who have discovered a certificate requirement late in their planning. Please do not assume that you have missed every useful option.
Some vaccines can be given at short notice, some courses can still be started, and certain malaria tablets begin shortly before entering a risk area. At Southampton Travel Clinic, we review what is realistically achievable for your particular journey rather than simply telling you that you should have booked earlier.
Early is better, but late advice is better than no advice. The priority is to identify what remains clinically useful and any certificate or course deadline that cannot be compressed.
Is a last-minute appointment still worthwhile?
Yes. NaTHNaC states that a last-minute appointment remains valuable even when travel is at very short notice. The assessment may identify vaccines that can still be given, malaria prevention that can be started, and practical precautions that reduce risk.
Your clinician should prioritise according to disease risk, entry requirements, time available, previous doses and personal suitability.
Why booking early is still preferable
The NHS recommends seeking advice four to six weeks before travel. This allows time for appointments, vaccine courses, immune response and management of any clinical questions.
Some schedules require more than one dose. Even where a full course cannot be completed before departure, the clinician can explain whether starting it remains appropriate and what follow-up is needed.
Yellow Fever has a certificate deadline
A first International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis for Yellow Fever normally becomes valid ten days after vaccination. If a destination requires a valid certificate and you arrive before that point, vaccination alone may not satisfy the entry requirement.
Possible consequences can include delay, quarantine, vaccination at the border or refusal of entry, depending on the country and circumstances. Check the complete route, including transit. Use our Yellow Fever certificate guide and contact our registered Southampton Yellow Fever centre.
Can malaria tablets be arranged urgently?
Sometimes. Official product information for atovaquone with proguanil states that prevention normally starts one to two days before entering a malaria area. Doxycycline information also describes starting one to two days beforehand.
The options differ in suitability, interactions, side effects and how long they must continue after leaving. Do not select a medicine solely because departure is close. Arrange a malaria consultation in Southampton for a destination-specific recommendation.
Protection may continue developing during travel
Receiving a vaccine shortly before departure may still offer benefit even when the full immune response has not developed by the flight date. The likely benefit depends on the vaccine, previous doses and when exposure is expected.
This does not remove an entry requirement and does not guarantee protection. Continue food, water, bite and animal-contact precautions appropriate to the destination.
What to do today
- Have your complete itinerary ready. Include every destination, transit country and the dates you enter and leave each place.
- Look for your vaccination history. Check the NHS App, your GP record and any paper vaccine or Yellow Fever certificates. Do not delay if you cannot find everything.
- Complete our online travel assessment. Tell us when you depart, where you are going, what you plan to do and the relevant details about your health and medicines.
- Choose an available appointment. The booking stage allows you to select a suitable clinic date and time from the appointments currently available.
- Bring any records you find. We can then confirm what is appropriate and, where suitable and available, provide the agreed vaccinations at the clinic.
Booking a last-minute appointment with Southampton Travel Clinic
Southampton Travel Clinic’s approach
Start by completing our online travel health assessment. It asks for your itinerary, departure date, previous vaccinations, health conditions, medicines, allergies and planned activities. Providing this before attendance means we can focus the appointment on the decisions that matter most when time is limited.
After submitting the assessment, select an available appointment through the booking stage. Your answers are reviewed clinically, and we will clarify anything that could affect suitability. At the appointment, we discuss the recommendations with you before any vaccination or treatment is provided.
If you are leaving very soon, enter the correct departure date and complete the form as fully as possible. We will prioritise the useful options, explain any deadline that cannot be shortened and help you leave with a clear plan rather than an unfinished checklist.
What your appointment will cover
We will look at your complete route rather than only the country name. This includes transit stops, the areas you will visit, accommodation, activities, previous doses and personal medical factors. We can then discuss:
- Which vaccinations are recommended or required for your itinerary.
- Which doses can still provide useful protection before or during the trip.
- Whether a Yellow Fever certificate deadline affects your plans.
- Whether malaria tablets are appropriate and when they need to start.
- Practical precautions for bites, food, water and animal exposure.
You can review our current vaccine prices before booking and find directions on our Southampton travel clinic page.
